Purton 'Ship Graveyard' on the River Severn

Whilst several of the hulks have been the ‘target’ of individual Society members, pride of place (in all sense of the words) must go to Paul Barnett. He has adopted the whole site and has an intimate knowledge of the vessels there. His tireless promotion of the site, coupled with his extensive research, gained him the ‘Adopt A Wreck’ Award at last year’s NAS Annual conference.
This year’s project aims to extend our knowledge of the site, with a site survey which will extend that done by Professor Toby Parker – we think there are now more vessels on view than at earlier dates. We also want to re-survey individual vessels, to gain some knowledge of the rate of decay (and human interference) with the site. All this will be done using local volunteers and you!
Participation is FREE – so now might be the time to get your ‘Part II’ project done – and be part of a major heritage initiative undertaken by the Society.
We will be partnered by Wessex Archaeology, who will be doing some geophysics on the site as well as providing outreach activities with their ‘coastal & Marine’ outreach officer. The project is supported through the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the ongoing ‘Diving Into History’ project. So – BE PART OF HISTORY!
Some project accommodation is available in the village of Purton on a first come – first served basis at £50 per weekend self catering.

If you wish to be involved, please contact the NAS office and leave your name for the project register. We will send out Joining Instructions about 14 days before the project starts.
