NAS Part II: Intermediate certificate in foreshore and underwater archaeology

Surveying a hulk at Salterns Creek.

The NAS Part II offers you the opportunity to put into practice some of the things you've learnt on Part I. You can survey a site of interest to you personally, or you can carry out the work required for this qualification as part of a group on a field school, or with other members of your diving club.

In addition to the survey work, the NAS Part II requires you to demonstrate a commitment to understanding what you are doing, by attending some archaeological conferences.

Submission of a short survey project report

The report has to conform to a number of criteria and guidelines, against which it will be assessed.

The 'Guidance Notes' and further help with the project can be obtained from the NAS office. The report can be submitted by an individual or a small or even a large group, provided all of the group have contributed to the data gathering and report writing. Those involved in group projects should, however, consider writing individual reports based on collective data.

Attendance of the equivalent of 2 days of archaeological conferences

Surveying at Salterns Creek.

As the course content up to NAS Part I concentrates on shipwreck archaeology, the aim of the conference attendance is to give participants the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of archaeology.

The 2-day conference requirement can be accumulated by attending individual lectures, short seminars or longer conferences. They do not have to be exclusively maritime related events. Participants are expected to have their attendance confirmed by the conference organiser or a NAS representative.

To contribute to your Part II a conference must be archaeologically relevant. There is a list of approved conferences on underwater archaeology in our diary; this list includes the NAS Annual Conference held each autumn in Portsmouth.
